Reflection (2/14 - A Valentine Poem)

Two, Fourteen, Oh…

I wipe the mist from the mirror
My reflection a collection of women I slept with.
Somewhat disgusted at this lust filled vessel.
Two years, too many, too fast.
Was on a bad track.
Blessed I didn’t have to back track.
Got off that path.
With no pregnant ladies, no babies
No STDs or AIDs.
Right then and there, staring at the wear and tear on my facade.
I should have fallen to my knees and gave praise to God.
But I came to my own conclusion
That this train was moving too fast in and out of tunnels
And I had to get off before it derailed and became detrimental.
No God, no preacher, no sex-ed teacher.
I know the fate that await.
That weight I did not want to carry.
Especially knowing one day I want to marry.

Two, Fourteen, Oh…

Back then I went at it alone, was by myself
One year celibate.
Now that I’m home, I have help.
It is the light that guides me.
But some nights I flip that switch.
Looking for something I crave.
Forgetting I’m saved.
If I’m not careful, I’ll have one foot in the grave.
You see, I’m single and ready to mingle.
Will I go all the way, or will He put a wrinkle in my plan.
These days, He has a way of speaking to me through my pastor in dreams.
Revealing the outcome, if I go through with these deeds.
So I wake up in a sweat, as I lay next to she.
It’s time to leave.
I go home alone and breathe a sigh of relief.
That God showed me my reflection.

Two, Fourteen, Oh…

Let’s remove these mirrors.
These distorted images can’t cloud me anymore.
This is a delicate situation.
Don’t want to be without you anymore.
Let’s not allow it to shatter into a million pieces.
Your light found and completed me.
My mind is much clearer now.
I understand what you need.
I’m your security now. Cover me.
This vessel is now filled with love. Pour into me.
I’ve committed to this relationship.
I’m ready to follow your lead.

Two, Fourteen, Oh…

You and me.

Full Circle

We took off from the starting line
at the same time.
Running the race in different directions.
Seeking affection from the opposite persuasion.
1st Kiss, 1st Crush, 1st Love.
Dating, relationships, relations.
Jumping hurdles of all kinds.
Investing body, soul, & mind.
This race at times becomes a relay.
As we pass the baton to our team mate,
who dropped it in midstride.
Leaving us alone to chase something in the distant future.
As we turned the corner,
we unknowingly began to approach one another.

In first passing, something happened.
We felt an unspoken passion!
I gave a little, he took a little.
She got to know a little, I got to grow a little.
It’s the little things that add up.
That make you know you’re with someone you can’t pass up.
This relationship could have hit the wall.
But after the 1st year
we decided to give it our all.
To give each other our hearts.
A fresh start.
Finally face to face.
Nothing missing, nothing broken.
We’ve come full circle.

Real Woman

I met a real woman
A real deal woman
A know how to get on her knees
With hands together or hands up
A pray and praise saved woman.

A someone special
She’s precious woman
A know that God is Love,
and Love is Life woman.
A brighten your day
Spark up your night woman.

An educated, sophisticated
Adventurous, travel the world woman.
Once was a girl, has put away childish things,
now a woman, woman.

A when I see her, she all up in my mind.
Got me thinking about her for days woman.
A no nonsense, handle her business, don’t play woman.

But yet a playful woman.
A smile, laugh, joke, tickle and giggle,
not afraid to act silly woman.

A confident, comfortable in her own skin,
Stay stunting, walk is mean woman.
A you don’t have to tell her,
She know she a real woman, woman.

A down for her man, hold his hand,
never fake, a helpmate woman.
A stand by his side with pride woman.
Make sure you fly, by her side woman.
A fix your lunch, zip your fly, straighten your tie,
send you out the door to conquer the world woman.
A pack a picnic, walk in the park, play ball with her man woman.
A take me out to dinner sometimes on her dime woman.
A woman that makes it easy for you to
want to do for her woman.

An all night out with her man dance woman.
A stay in the house all night with her man,
candlelight, fragrance nice, massage right, lingerie out of sight,
body tight, romance woman.

An out with her girls, that’s a must.
It’s all good, she earned my trust woman.
A not easily influenced by others, but make her decisions woman.
A grown woman.
A know how to make a house a home woman.

A virtuous woman.
Won’t hurt you intentional woman.

Actions speak louder than words.
So, she’s the type of woman that,
you know.
Saying, that I care, is one thing.
But I’ll peel my flesh back out of place.
And bust through my chest plate.
To expose my heart
And show her I love her, woman.

A want to bring her home to your mother woman.
An ask her father for her hand woman.
A put a ring on her finger, that’ll bring the temperature down woman.
A wife woman.
A love her husband unconditional woman.
A mother to her children woman.

I met a real woman!

Solomon James

Don’t be like, be better than me.
My ceiling is your floor, stand taller than me.
The sky is not the limit, reach for the stars & beyond.
Actions speak louder than words, but your word is your bond.
Always remember, you only have 1 mother.
She loves you, always love her.
Treat women like you want your sister to be treated by others.
Look out for your brothers.
Love your wife as God so loved the world.
Be ready to die for that girl.
Look a man in his eyes.
Shake his hand firm, walk with pride.
Grow to be healthy, wealthy, and wise.
What you want, you can have.
Your great grandmother, we call her “Granny”, always says,
“The Lord will provide”.
Knowledge is power. Don’t take it for granted.
Trust is earned. Respect is demanded.
Only follow those that are going somewhere.
And when it’s time for you to lead, don’t move in fear!
Keep in mind that intoxicating situations, may lead to devastation.
Only God can judge you, but stay out of the courtroom,
unless you become a lawyer.
Be proud of your heritage, embrace your culture.
Travel the nations, see the world.
You reap what you sow, so sow in good ground, it comes back 10 fold.
Laugh, smile, play.
Give, forgive, pray.
Everyone’s path is different.
No one’s journey the same.
Along the way, you’ll make mistakes,
but take responsibility for your actions.
No one else is to blame.
This letter goes out to my unborn son,
Solomon James.

Tic-Tock

When your watch stops
And the tic of your clock doesn’t tock.
Time waits for no one.
When the flow of blood slows,
through your veins
to your feet and your brain.
And the beat of your heart cease
And they pronounce you deceased.
Time waits for no one.

You can’t buy it,
cheat to win it,
or steal it from a vault.

When you’re 65
And you look back on life.
You’ll ask yourself,
“Am I living,
or am I just waiting to die”.
And you’ll realize
Time waits for no one.

What's in Me?

I was watching that Gatorade commercial
And got to thinking,
What’s in me?

Sure I got the usual
Bones, blood, and muscle

But I’m talking
what’s in my personal, individual, one of a kind make up.
What’s in me?

When I look closely,
I see…

A man with a plan or two, and a few in reserve

I see…
A 5’4”, 140, caramel complexion stallion filled with passion

A baron that don’t know the meaning of stop,
I only slow down, switch gears, and switch lanes ‘til I speed up again.

A brother with persistence in him, meaning there’s no limits to him.

I am filled with Christ,
Walk with his swagger, act like he act, call me a character

Filled with Leadership qualities, my supporters follow me

I do play basketball,
So yeah, Gatorade is in me too.

Take a look inside,
What’s in you?

When I Think

When I think about that time I did a 180
On the on ramp to Rt. 80
In the rain
With on coming traffic staring me in the face
But no traffic came, I put the car in reverse
Did an about face, and went along my way
At a bit of a slower pace.

When I think about that time
I was about eight or nine
Playing Star Wars with my cousins
I stuck my head up from behind the boxes
And caught a Duracell size D in the eye.
Now I have 4 eyes, but at least I didn’t go blind.

When I think about the time I got robbed by 4 dudes,
coming from 4 ways, on 1 street,
rolling up on 1 Steve.
No where to go,
I still broke out for sure.
But they caught me and flashed a gun for show.
Took my money and chain,
The shirt off my back and my briefcase.
Once again,
I backed up, did an about face,
And hopped the first bus to anywhere.
I could have been dead, but I’m still here.

When I think
on the goodness of God.
